This is a bittersweet tale about the relationship and lives of Vincent and Theo Van Gogh. Although you may already know their story, Deborah Heiligman extensively researched the Van Goghs to examine the lives of both brothers who loved each other beyond measure even when they had violent disagreements.
Read this if you like art, stories about family, biographies, or just want to read excellent writing from an author who has won a Printz Honor Award and the YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award for this book. This one will stay with you for a while.

Books We've Read Lately: Perennials by Julie Cantrell
Can you ever really go home again? Eva Sutherland, or “Lovey” as she is known to her family and childhood friends, is going to find out. Desperate to escape Oxford, Mississippi and personal tragedies and mistruths, Eva left as a teenager and now finds herself to be 45 years old, alone after a disastrous love affair in Arizona, and in a precarious job situation. She receives an urgent call from her parents who are insistent that she returns to Oxford to reconcile with her sister. Later, she deals with news that her parents have been concealing from her.
We love Mississippi authors! Ms. Cantrell is from Oxford, and her website is here.
If you love books about family relationships, take a look at Perennials. Our Oxford location has a copy, but it can be sent to Senatobia or DeSoto upon your request if you are a member of our Northwest community.

Possibly....the next big thing
For whatever reason, whether it be the cover of this book or the fact that it is slightly larger(more pages) than some other books, people kept asking me about this book while I was reading it. My response, " Think twilight, but instead of vampire and werewolves, teenagers who can kill people with their mind and also heal people." But one person cannot do both, of course.Mara Dyer was in a terrible accident. She and her friends were exploring an insane asylum in town at night when the whole building came crashing down. Her best friend along with her now "ex-boyfriend" and his sister all died.
Now, to escape from bouts of PTSD, she and her family have moved to sunny Miami. But things keep happening. Strange things. Things that involve death. Mara walks by a house before school and sees a dog that has been chained up and abused. It makes her so angry. She walks back by the house after school to save the dog only to find the dog's owner dead. The same thing happens to her horribly mean Spanish teacher. Dead. These events continue to happen. Again and again. Until one day, Mara realizes she has envisioned each and every one of these people dead. Is she the reason they are all dying? Does she have such powers?
She thinks she is going crazy and feels that way until she meets Noah. Noah becomes her person. He understands her; he makes her feel safe. But Mara is afraid she is going to hurt him. And almost does. What will she have to do to keep him and her family safe?
There's a lot going on this book. But it's good. A little different than some of the other series out right now. I would give it 3 1/2 stars. It didn't hook me completely, but I did want to keep reading from beginning to end.
Come checkout The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin today and find your new favorite trilogy.

Book Rec: Fangirl
Written by our wonderful student worker Katie:
Fangirl takes place during Cath Avery's first year of college. Cath is obsessed with Simon Snow. She clutches to Simon Snow's fandom after her mother leaves her, her father, and sister. Cath has to learn who she without her twin Wren. Cath is completely out of her comfort zone. She stays to herself, and she is even afraid to go the cafeteria alone. If you want to find out if Cath finds herself, if she can make it without holding her sister's hand, and if she leaves Simon Snow behind, you should pick Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell!
Thanks for the great recommendation, Katie! A copy is available at both Senatobia and Oxford.

Book recommendation: Tiger's Curse
Book review by Katie, one of our fabulous student workers!
If you are looking for a good fantasy, look no further than Tiger's Curse. It is a MUST read.
This thrilling novel will have you on the edge of your seat. If you thought you had hard time picking between the Salvatore brothers, they have nothing on Ren and Kishan, two Indian princes who are cursed to turn in to tigers.
Bella Swan has nothing on Kelsey Hayes. Kelsey is a risk taker who puts her life on hold to help break a 300-year-old Indian curse.
If you start to read this book, make sure you have nothing else planned because once you start there is no turning back…..

Orange is the New Black
It's all the rage on Netflix right now, but have you read the book? Did you know it was a book? Orange is the New Black is the personal experience of Piper Kerman and the year she spent in a women's prison in Danbury Connecticut.
Piper is the daughter of two teachers and a graduate of Smith College. After she graduates college, she feels like she needs an adventure. That's when she meets up with Nora, who doesn't bother to hide that she's in the drug business. Nora asks her to travel the country with her and Piper quickly accepts. Piper isn't involved with drugs smuggling, she's just along for the ride.
But she can only hang out for so long before Nora expects her to pull her weight. That's when Piper decides to hit the road and start living the straight and narrow: a job producing and a nice, down to earth boyfriend. Life is good, until the Feds show up at her door. Turns out Nora's drug ring got busted and Piper got ratted out in the process. That is how Piper end up spending thirteen long month in prison.
Through Piper's eyes we are able to see a group of women who have been discarded by society. But they come together in unexpected way to form their own family and make life as normal as possible while in prison. Orange is the New Black is definitely a heart warming story where you least expect to find one.

Staff Pick/Summer Reads
I just love those lazy, hazy days of summer. Lying in the sun reading a book has always been my favorite and I just read a great book for doing just that. If you want a light-hearted, funny read try out Sophie Kinsella's most recent book, Wedding Night(Although it isn't that recent. It's been out for a year, it's just taken me this long to get around to reading it. Or maybe I was just saving it for the beach!)Lottie just knows that her boyfriend is going to propose over lunch after he tells her he has a "big question" to ask her. When his big questions turns out to be about travel Lottie is done with these boyfriend's who can't commit. Just as Lottie has given up, her "summer fling" , Ben, from many years ago call her up and proposes after one date.
Lottie's sister Fliss know how these breaks up go. Every time, Lottie does something extreme and then regrets it in the end. That's why she will stop at nothing to ensure this marriage between Lottie and ben either never happens or isn't valid.

All Fall Down by Jennifer Weiner/Staff Pick
Allison Weiss has everything she ever wanted: a good
husband, a smart, beautiful daughter, a house in the suburbs, and a lucrative
job as a blog writer. So, why is she so unhappy? Well, she isn’t as close to
her husband as she once was for starters. She feels like she is left to do
everything: take care of the house, their daughter and all of her activities,
her sick dad, and her mother who is totally the opposite of self-sufficient.
All while working a full-time job(which just happens to pay more than her
husband’s).
The only thing that makes her feel better are those little
pills the doctor prescribed for her back. Or should we say doctor(s)? The more
pills Allison takes, the more she needs just to feel “normal”. And she will stop
at nothing to obtain them, even if it means losing everything. Or does it? It
is with the realization that she could lose her daughter that lands her in a
not so classy rehab where she will learn about herself and the world around
her.
Jennifer Weiner can tell a story with the best of them.
There isn’t a book written by her that I haven’t enjoyed. And they just keep
getting better. Her characters are real with real issues we can all relate to
in one way or another. From page one, this heart-touching book sucks you in.
Come by and check this book out today! You won’t regret it.

The Fault in Our Stars
I LOVE LOVE LOVE John Green! He has 4 books that he has written by himself and others that he has co-authored. I'm so excited that his most recent book, The Fault in Our Stars, is hitting the big screen this Friday, June 6th. There are many great, inspirational quotes throughout the book, and Oprah recently posted "The 6 Best Passages from the Fault in Our Stars" on her website.
Here is a preview(and don't forget to checkout the book and movie and let us know which you thought was better):

Happy Birthday, Shakespeare!
It's Shakespeare's 450th!
A fun book to try is William Shakespeare's Star Wars : Verily, A New Hope by Ian Doescher.
Doescher took the plot of the first movie of the original trilogy of Star Wars and did it Shakespeare style.
Although you may have watched the film a ton, you've probably never experienced Star Wars like this. Even R-2 D-2 and Chewbacca join in on the iambic pentameter.
Senatobia has two copies of this in our McNaughton Collection at call number 812.6 D 2013.
