It's All Go All the Time at the NWCC Library

Classes, video games, sewing, speed dating, and flash mobs, oh my!  This is just a sample of the October activities at the library. Courtney has taught 33 classes to over 600 students to students in English, reading enhancement, history, psychology, and mass communication.  In addition, Maya and Glen have offered 11 sessions on using the 3D printer.  Maya also offers “Crafternoons” where she teaches a variety of crafts such as knitting, sewing, and coding for computer programs. Maya is also sponsoring the new video gamers club, which meets on Tuesdays at the library.  Fifteen to twenty students have attended each week.

We celebrated Teen Read Week  October 19-23 with our first ever Reading Flash Mob.   A flash mob is a large group of people who gather in a public space, perform an unusual act, and disperse quickly.  Faculty and students were asked to bring a book and read on the band practice field for ten minutes.  Over 50 students, faculty, and staff participated.

Ten students participated in Cupcake Wars where they decorated cupcakes based on a favorite book or author.  Ten students entered the contest and decorated a total of 23 cupcakes.  Prizes were awarded for "Most Colorful," "Most Creative," and "Best Overall Depiction of the Book or Author."  Winners included Katie Parker (Most Colorful for Twilight), Logen Smith (Most Creative for his depiction of To Kill a Mockingbird), and Quinshava Rogers (Best Overall Depiction of Where's Boo).

On Tuesday of this week, we celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a balloon release in memory or honor of someone who has or has had breast cancer. Finally, we had a program for Northwest faculty (Senatobia) called “Date a Database,” or speed dating at the library.  Your librarians presented five-minute dates or demos of the following  resources:  Freegal, Biography in Context, A to Z the World, Lexicomp, and Rocket Languages.   We have seen over 1200 students, faculty, and staff for all of our October programs and classes.  It’s been a busy month and we’ve loved every minute of it!
