James Langston Hughes
[1902-1967] was born in Joplin, Missouri.
He was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and
columnist. Hughes attended Central High
School in Cleveland, Ohio, where he began writing poetry in the eighth grade. He
was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form called
jazz poetry. The library has a variety
