Fiction for the College Student

Hey Northwest students! Are you looking for something to read that YOU can relate to? Here are a few books about college students and life after high school.

Adam, now a rising rock star, and Mia, a successful cellist, reunite in New York and reconnect after the horrific events that tore them apart when Mia almost died in a car accident three years earlier.

Being consummate fans of the Simon Snow series helped Cath and her twin sister, Wren, cope as little girls whose mother left them, but now, as they start college but not as roommates, Cath fears she is unready to live without Wren

Chloe hasn't had the easiest childhood. With a mother who was absent most of the time, she practically had to raise herself. Determined to start a new life and leave her demons behind, she heads to West Virginia University with her best friends Amber and Logan. On the first day of classes, she spots a student who takes her breath away.

May: Mental Health Awareness & YA Lit

There are not many days left in May now, but it is never to late to be aware. May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

According to NAMI, the 2011 National College Health Assessment (NCHA), a survey of nearly 28,000 college students conducted by the American College Health Association, revealed 30% reported they "felt so depressed it was difficult to function" at least once in the last twelve months and 6.6% reported they "seriously considered suicide" one or more times during the past year. The survey also states that depression is one of the leading causes for poor performance in college students.

Do you have or know someone who has an eating disorder, depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD? A story with people facing the same problems can go a long way towards understanding and accepting a problem in a young person's life. Try one of these great titles at the library or share them with someone you know.
