Mattie's Pledge by Jan Drexler is a book about Amish families in the 1840s who are travelling across America in wagons, hoping to find a better life. Their horses and sheep are driven along with them, and amid hardships the families bond.
Jacob loves Mattie but she wants to travel farther west to Oregon to see the big mountains and ocean, and he wants to settle down with her as his wife in an area closer by.
Along the way they encounter three brothers who are looking for horses to steal. Two of the brothers are killed in their attempt to steal horses from the freight line, but Cole, the surviving brother, sets his sights on Mattie and the horses in her wagon train, telling her he will take her to Oregon with him.
