James Langston Hughes

James Langston Hughes [1902-1967] was born in Joplin, Missouri.  He was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist.  Hughes attended Central High School in Cleveland, Ohio, where he began writing poetry in the eighth grade. He was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form called jazz poetry.  The library has a variety of books about Langston Hughes.

Dreams - Poem by Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
